Bayern Munich controlled the vast majority of the game against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side, until they didn’t. Bayern’s early dominance was because Emery set his side up to absorb pressure and spring on the counter — a tactic that almost proved to be successful. While Vincent Kompany’s side dominated the ball, they struggled to produce anything meaningful, until Luis Díaz came on that is.

Maycon Cardozo and Tim Binder gave a good showing of themselves, but proved that they both still lack that cutting edge. The gap in skill was evident when Díaz was subbed on in the 63rd minute, and no one felt it more than the Villa defence. Lucho was an immediate headache, especially for Matty Cash. The right-back looked helpless against Díaz’s elite dribbling, which would eventually pave the way for Bayern’s second goal.

In the 73rd minute, the Colombian winger produced a fine bit of footwork, easing past Cash and rocketing his shot past Marco Bizot. The 29-year-old’s strike would prove to crucial, coming as the game-winning goal.

After his fantastic performance off the bench, Luis Díaz was aptly awarded man of the match.

Despite not playing much, Lucho looks like he’s already operating at his best. It goes to show what havoc a fully rested Luis Díaz can wreak.
