Earlier this week, North Carolina announced a contract extension for men’s golf coach Andrew DiBitetto. While he hasn’t yet been able to bring a national championship back to Chapel Hill, DiBitetto has basically accomplished everything else as the Tar Heels’ coach. His 10-year tenure so far has been a success.
Across the sporting spectrum UNC has quite a number of very good coaches in their various sports. Yes, there is some we have questions about, too. DiBitetto’s contract extension and his success got me thinking about who the best coach at Carolina currently is. For today’s question of the day, I want to know: who is the best coach currently employed by UNC?
Carolina currently employs six coaches who have won national titles with the Tar Heels. Plenty have had success elsewhere too, and two have even won championships at the professional levels of their sport. However, no one has quite had the success since arriving at UNC as Jenny Levy.
Levy took over as Carolina women’s lacrosse coach in 1994. She’s been the only coach the program has ever had as she was the one hired to build the women’s lacrosse team. Safe to say, that was a pretty good choice.
UNC’s first NCAA Tournament appearance under Levy came in 1997. Other than a brief blip in 2003-04 and in 2020 (in which the tournament was cancelled), her Tar Heel teams have appeared in every tournament since. However, her record goes beyond just appearing in the NCAA Tournament. Carolina has won four national championships over the year, taking home the trophy in 2013, 2016, 2022, and 2025. They’ve also been especially good recently. Since winning their first title in 2013, the Tar Heels have made it to at least the final four on nine occasions. Just last year, they came agonizingly close, falling in the national championship game.
As mentioned, the university is employing a bunch of championship-winning coaches. However, none have had quite the success at UNC that Levy has had. She’s literally turned a new program into the biggest force in her sport right now. Other Carolina coaches have done similar things and have more titles in their trophy cabinet’s but none of them are still leading a Tar Heel team right now.
