California Sen. Aisha Wahab was officially sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, becoming the first Afghan American to serve in Congress.
Wahab is filling the state’s 14th Congressional District seat, vacated by former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned from Congress in April after being accused of sexual assault and harassment. He has denied the allegations.
Wahab will face BART Board President Melissa Hernandez in the November general election to determine who will serve the next full two-year term.
Early voting and vote-by-mail begin Oct. 5.
Election Day is Nov. 3.
