Bayern Munich are now on to the second round of the DFB-Pokal after coming 1-0 down within the opening five minutes against VfL Osnabrück to win 4-1. An absolute wonder strike from Robin Meißner made for a cagey opening for the German Rekordmeister, but Vincent Kompany’s side eventually established their foothold in the match and went on to score four unanswered goals.
Harry Kane grabbed a brace, while the other two goals for Bayern were scored by Tom Bischof and Michael Olise in between Kane’s two goals (Bayern’s 1st and 4th). For Kane, he’s now one goal away from reaching his 150th in a Bayern shirt. The England skipper was still pleased to get the win in what had all the hallmarks of potential being a banana skin away tie in the DFB-Pokal. Meißner’s early goal really forced Bayern’s hand to show why they won the domestic double last season, and they passed that test with flying colors.
“It was a good performance. It’s never easy in such an away ground and with a very good atmosphere. They started the game with an amazing goal, and we had to stay calm,” Kane said shortly after the full-time whistle (via @iMiaSanMia).
Jonathan Tah’s failed clearance paved the way for Meißner’s wonder volley, and the pressure was immediately put on Bayern. However, the reigning Bundesliga champions quickly started to knock on the door of Jonas Krumrey’s goal, and never really looked to lose control from Kane’s 18th minute equalizer off of a sublime lofted pass from Joshua Kimmich until the full-time whistle, aside from the occasional Osnabrück counter attack.
“I’m happy we got the win. We could’ve scored more goals in the end, we have great attacking players who can hurt teams,” Kane continued in his assessment of the match. On the overall balance, Bayern had eight shots on target to Osnabrück’s three, so he’s not wrong in saying they probably could have, and should have scored more than four goals, but the Pokal is about results, and Bayern will now await to see who they’ll face in the second round. The draw for the second round will take place this Saturday.
