A shooting in Minneapolis has left two victims and the shooter dead and at least six others, including three police officers, injured Wednesday.
According to the City of Minneapolis, the shooting unfolded in the area of 15 East Grant Street on Wednesday afternoon. Police received a call of shots fired at a high-rise apartment building in the Loring Park neighborhood just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers arrived on the scene, they heard gunfire inside of the building and began approaching the upper floors of the structure. There they encountered hazy conditions within the building, and then were targeted by a burst of gunfire, according to officials.
Two officers were struck by gunfire, and a third suffered an injury during that response, according to police. One of those officers struck by gunfire was taken into surgery, and there was no immediate word on their condition. The other two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
At least one of the victims that was shot during the attack was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second later died at an area hospital, according to police.
Three other individuals who were shot at the apartment building were taken to area hospitals, according to police. There was no immediate word on their conditions.
The suspected shooter in the attack has also died, according to authorities.
According to the Hennepin County Medical Center, a total of seven patients were transported to the facility after the shooting.
City officials are asking residents to avoid the area at this time.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said on social media that state officials are offering assistance following the shooting.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
FBI Director Kash Patel has also offered the bureau’s support, and numerous local law enforcement agencies are assisting Minneapolis police in investigating the shooting.
Another press briefing is expected Wednesday evening.
