Germany received its first F-35 fighter jet Friday, marking a major milestone in the country’s effort to modernize its air force with the American-made aircraft.
The aircraft, built at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth facility, is the first of 35 F-35s Germany has ordered. Germany’s military said the jets will replace the country’s aging Tornado fleet and will strengthen its ability to operate alongside NATO allies.
German Defense Minister Pistorius, military leaders and Lockheed Martin officials gathered in North Texas for the rollout ceremony.
“The F-35 will enhance our ability to defend our country, to fulfill our responsibility within NATO, and to contribute to security in Europe,” Pistorius said.
The first aircraft will remain in the United States for pilot training in Arkansas before additional F-35s enter service in Germany.
