A UMass Dartmouth football player has died after a double stabbing early Saturday morning in a Wendy’s parking lot in Providence, Rhode Island.
The stabbings occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday on Charles Street, according to WJAR.
UMass Dartmouth identified the person who was killed as 18-year-old Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back from Boston who graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River.
The other person who was stabbed, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was stabbed in the head and neck area and is being treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police confirmed that both of the stabbing victims are members of the UMass Dartmouth football team and said they were at the nearby Mezza Lounge with other teammates. UMass Dartmouth football played a home game against Framingham State on Friday night, losing 23-21.
A suspect is currently being held by UMass Darmouth police, and authorities said they are still trying to determine what led up to the stabbing.
David Morales, the Democratic nominee for Providence mayor, said in a statement on X on Saturday morning that he is “heartbroken” by Antoine’s death.
“Just two weeks ago, his mom sent him off to college with hope and pride for everything ahead of him. Today, she and an entire community are grieving an unimaginable loss,” he said. “My thoughts are with his mother, family, teammates, and everyone who witnessed this violence. I am also praying for the full recovery of the second victim.”
