The Carquinez Bridge and a busy stretch of Highway 101 in San Francisco are fully open for the Monday morning commute after Caltrans completed two major weekend projects ahead of schedule.
The westbound Interstate 80 span of the Carquinez Bridge, which carries traffic southbound toward the Bay Area, reopened at midnight after being closed since Friday night.
Crews installed a new layer of asphalt on the bridge during the closure. Caltrans said it had been 23 years since the span received this type of work and officials hope the new pavement will last another 20 years.
Caltrans also completed work early on Highway 101 near Hospital Curve in San Francisco, with all lanes reopening around 1 a.m. Monday.
The highway had been reduced to two lanes in each direction over the weekend while crews performed what Caltrans described as crucial drainage improvements.
The work is intended to make the section of Highway 101 less prone to flooding.
