Con Azucar Café is a national franchise, but it all started with a Bay Area visionary and a dream.
Owner Alejandra Gonzalez graduated from Los Gatos High School and attended a vocational school in San Jose. That landed her a job at Tesla, where she ran their new recycling department, eventually overseeing 400 employees. But she wanted more.
She decided to quit Tesla and open a Mexican coffee shop with her husband, calling it Con Azucar. It was a gamble.
“It is very scary,” Gonzalez said. “We still don’t know what’s on the other side. But it’s a learning process like everything. I think we’ve learned a lot throughout the time.”
The gamble has paid off. Con Azucar has become an institution, leading to locations across the Bay Area and franchises in Los Angeles, Nebraska and Texas. Moving forward, one investor has developed a plan to open 100 franchise locations in 10 years in Southern California.
