A student at a Meriden high school was arrested and is accused of bringing a BB gun to school on Monday, according to the Meriden Police Department.
The Orville H. Platt High School student was charged with possession of a facsimile firearm, breach of peace, dangerous weapon on school grounds and interfering with an officer, police said.
Inside the student’s backpack was a black BB handgun attached to a weapon light that closely resembled a Glock firearm, police said. The student sat on his backpack to hide it from officers, according to police.
Platt High School was alerted of the possibility of a student in possession of a weapon on school grounds and brought him to the office, police said. Dan Morisse-Corsetti, principal of Platt High School, said the student refused to be searched by officials and fled the building.
The student was found by a school resource officer on Stoddard Drive, police said. After Garcia approached the student, he started to run again, and additional units were called. It took several officers to handcuff the student because he kept resisting arrest, according to police.
The student was issued a $10,000 bond, and his court date is not known at this time.
“The safety of students and staff is my number one priority,” Morisse-Corsetti said in a statement on the school’s website. “We continue to work with the MPD and our security team at Platt High School to ensure everyone’s safety.”
