Former Miami Hurricanes star Mark Pope was arrested on armed robbery and other charges after he was accused of pistol-whipping a woman, records showed.
The 27-year-old was booked into Miami-Dade’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Thursday and also faces an aggravated battery charge, records show.
According to an arrest report, Pope and the victim knew each other through their neighborhood and had agreed to meet at a park on Southwest 218th Street.
While there, they got into a dispute in the victim’s vehicle before Pope pulled out a gun and hit her in the face with it then forcibly took her phone from her hand, the report said.
The victim fled from the car and went to a nearby gas station where she called police.
Pope was found a short time later and taken into custody before he was booked into jail.
During a Friday bond court appearance attended by Pope’s parents, his defense attorney argued for a reasonable bond, telling a judge Pope works for a security company and has no prior arrests.
“He’s a graduate of the University of Miami, was a standout on the University of Miami football team, was a standout on the football team at University of Massachusetts, this has to be some misunderstanding with some lady friend,” attorney Robert Pelier said.
The judge gave Pope house arrest with a GSP monitor and told him to stay away from the alleged victim.
Pope, a wide receiver who grew up in Miami, attended Miami Southridge High School before going to UM beginning in 2018.
He played in 34 games for the Hurricanes before transferring to Jackson State and then Massachusetts.
In 2024, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, but he was released in 2025.
